Happy Birthday September! The Sapphire is the representing stone for the month of September, and one of our favorites! Blue Sapphire is classified as the mineral species Corundum, and typically ranges in shades of dark blue, but can also range from greenish blue to violet blue. Also included in the corundum species are many other colored stones which come in pink, purple, orange, green and violet, which are classified as "fancy sapphires." The term "sapphire" can apply to any species of Corundum which is not colored Red - a red corundum is classified as a ruby.

Sapphire symbolizes truth, faithfulness, and sincerity. Sapphire is said to empower the wearer to seek truth and remain faithful; it protects marriages and therefore a wonderful engagement gift. The sapphire also is said to soothe irritability and allows the wearer to relax the body by easing physical pain. In purchasing sapphires, the color is the most important quality factor to evaluate. According to GIA, the closer the stone's color is to a velvety to violetish blue in medium to medium dark tones will be the most highly valued, and should have a strong saturation in color without darkening or compromising brilliance.
